Instructions

First you will need to choose an ethical issue such as euthanasia or recreational cannabis use etc. You will then need to spend some time researching different view-points of groups that support the issue or oppose the issue.

You will need to choose 2x groups that are for and 2x groups that are against, for example:

● Euthanasia = Hospice NZ (against) – Yes For Compassion (for)

You will also need to research how current practice and laws affect the wellbeing of society, those indirectly affected (friends and family) and those directly affected e.g.

● Recreational Cannabis Use = ILLEGAL in NZ – how does this affect well-being?

● Sex Work = LEGAL in NZ – how does this affect well-being?

You can get valuable information from the internet but you must ensure that you are using reliable sources.

● What is the current law surrounding this?

Wellbeing of people directly affected

● Who are the people that are directly affected?
● How are the current laws/practices affecting their wellbeing? (remember, if you have chosen to study abortion, you are explaining how the current law affects wellbeing NOT how abortion itself affects the wellbeing)
● Depending on what your ethical issue is you may want to discuss; access/in-access to services; the way society views them; the way the law views them.

Wellbeing of other people associated (friends/family of those directly affected)

● Who are these people? Family, friends, colleagues etc.
● How are the current laws/practices affecting their wellbeing? (remember, if you have chosen to study abortion, you are explaining how the current law affects wellbeing NOT how abortion itself affects the wellbeing)
● Depending on what your ethical issue is you may want to discuss; how they might view/treat the people directly affected; how the choices of the people directly affected might affect their wellbeing.

Societal Wellbeing

● Explain the law/current practice surrounding your ethical issue.
● How is the wider society affected by the current law/practice? (for example, if you have chosen to study abortion, you are explaining how the current law affects wellbeing NOT how abortion itself affects the wellbeing)
● Depending on what your ethical issue is you may want to discuss; cost to the country in tax; safety of neighbourhoods/communities; societal beliefs and values.
