Assignment Requirements: Demonstrate an understanding of the plot of Samuel Wells’ “Johari.”
Develop and write a thesis sentence that gives an opinion about the story that can be illustrated in the body paragraphs through examples. Clearly state that thesis at the close of the opening paragraph. Develop the thesis in at least three body paragraphs that give examples (including citations from the story) that directly support the student’s opinion (thesis). Recommended steps:
Write a summary of what happens in “Johari.” This summary will NOT be part of your paper. The purpose of writing a summary is to ensure you are clear on the plot of the story.
Come up with an opinion about the story. This opinion will become the basis of your thesis sentence. Your opinion can be about the story as a whole, ie “Johari is a poorly written story” or “Johari is a brilliantly written story” — or — your opinion can be about some aspect of the writing. For example, many students do well giving an opinion about a writing technique employed by the writer, ie “Wells uses flashbacks to create suspense in “Johari.” In many cases, students write about a particular character, ie “In Wells’ ‘Johari,’ Wendy is a far more appropriate girlfriend for Jack.” Or, some students choose to make an observation about life, such as “People do crazy things when they become attracted to someone new,” and then use the body paragraphs to show how the story demonstrates this observation. Some students find it helpful to use the list of literary terms to look for techniques the writer uses successfully (or unsuccessfully.) Once you have chosen a thesis, come up with three different supporting paragraphs that illustrate your opinion (otherwise known as thesis, or main point.” Choose quotations from the story that help the reader understand your thesis and include those quotations in your body paragraphs. Write a conclusion that restates your opinion in different words and brings your essay to a satisfying end.
