Business in Organizational Security Management Capstone

1. Proposed Research Question or Premise

Performing Emergency Management in the U.S. Military differs greatly versus the private sector. How do they differ and what are the impacts of those differences? This paper will examine and compare the differences in emergency planning, response, and education, the impacts of those differences, and the lessons learned taken from each.

2. How will you integrate degrees core courses?

Core courses: Emergency Planning, Legal and Ethical Issues in Security Management, Information Systems Security

3. Research Methodologies

I will utilize several methods on researching applicable information regarding how the military vs. private sector perform emergency management. I will research each element (planning, response, and education) separately, detailing aspects within each element and compare how they differ. I will utilize white papers and academic journals available on performing emergency management within the military and private sector. I intend to utilize papers/journals that have been written by both service members and civilians to ensure to get perspectives from both the military and private sectors. I will focus on how each sector plans for emergencies, responds during those emergencies, and how each educates their service members/employees and the public. I intend to interview service members in supervisory roles to gain a perspective from those who are responsible for emergency management within the military.

4. Why your product will present new or original information.

Emergency Management evolves throughout time, thus new systems, processes and methods of performing emergency management emerge within the field. While there may have been comparisons done in the past, conducting a comparison now would provide new information versus what has already been compared previously. In addition, each company, military installation, and emergency responder may have different emergency management plans, response procedures, and education plans in place.

5. How will product contribute as useful resource for others?

By comparing emergency management performed by the military and private sector and indentifying the differences, I will bring to light lessons learned from each sector. While each sector may perform emergency management in a specific way for a reason, identifying the impacts of those differences could lead to discussions of positive changes being made to both sectors and to the emergency management field as a whole.
