Purpose
To develop essential academic skills required for degree-level study while drawing on your clinical experience.

Assessment 1 Instructions
Part 1: Individual Discussion Posts
You will write ONE ungraded post in the online discussion forum, which will include three sections. Access to the online discussion forum will be provided in due course, and you will be notified once it’s available. Please make sure to keep a copy of your post for your records, as it will be required for your official assessment submission. The post should be 900 words ±10%, with each section containing 250-300 words, and you must support your work with relevant academic references. You must write your post in simple, clear, professional language. The content of the posts is as follows:
Discussion Post
Section 1: Moving Into Degree-Level Study
Discuss what it is like for diploma-qualified nurses to return to study at the university level.
Include:
- Academic challenges (e.g., reading articles, writing essays, using references)
- How critical thinking helps you understand academic materials
- why confidence and self-belief (self-efficacy) matter during this transition
Section 2: Using Reflection for Learning
Explain how reflective practice helps you learn and develop as a student nurse and practising nurse.
Consider:
- Briefly discuss one reflective model you think is relevant to use in nursing practice
- How reflection helps you identify what you need to improve
- How reflection supports safe, person-centred nursing care
Section 3: Critical Thinking in Nursing Practice Describe how critical thinking is used every day in nursing.
Think about:
- Making safe decisions
- Using evidence-based practice
- Asking questions and assessing information
- How critical thinking helps keep patients safe
Part 2: Final Written Summary Essay 2,500 (±10%) words
After you complete your post (i.e. all three sections), you will write one individual essay that brings your ideas together.
Your essay should:
- Summarise the key points made in your discussion posts
- Include 10-15 academic references, cited correctly in the text
- Demonstrate how reading other students’ posts influenced your learning
- Be written in clear academic English, with accurate and consistent referencing
