The mental health of adolescents is more at risk than ever due to a significant change in their behaviors in recent years. All nurses should have the knowledge to assess and intervene, even if they are not trained mental health professionals. Below is a brief nursing encounter with a patient:
A nurse in a busy emergency department was assigned to a 15-year-old male patient who had been brought in by his parents. The parents were concerned because they were unable to wake their son and keep him awake.
Instructions:
1. After reading about this nurse encounter, answer the following questions: Discuss the nurse’s role in assessing the risk of suicide for this population, given the unique challenges adolescents face.
