Strategies for Academic Portfolios Creating a nursing portfolio focused on my academic achievements and development throughout my career is essential in demonstrating my professional growth. (Burns, 2018) It is a testament to the skills and knowledge I have acquired, reflecting achievements, credentials, and recognitions received as I continue to further my education and career. I plan to develop and organize my portfolio by dividing it into sections, including a table of contents and a brief introduction, placing the documents in chronological order, and summarizing their content. (Burns, 2018) I intend to include a professional development plan where I can assess myself, set goals, develop strategies, gather resources, create a timeline, and track my progress by including the five-step SMART goal tools. These goals provide a structured framework that ensures clarity, focus, and measurable progress that contributes to my overall success. (Davis & Carman, 2010) Specific: A well-defined goal outlines what needs to be achieved. Measurable: Measuring progress is essential for tracking success. Achievable: Goals that are challenging yet attainable. Relevant: Align goals with individual objectives. Time-Bound: Setting a deadline adds a sense of urgency and commitment. Next, I will showcase my top scholarly work of each course and incorporate reflective statements about that specific academic experience. What I have learned, how it has shaped my nursing practice, and how it aligns with my career goals. I also plan to incorporate photographs of my professional experiences, including dates, locations, and names of each event to enhance my portfolio. These strategies will improve my portfolio, setting it apart from others while allowing me to display my accomplishments and actively plan for future development and social change. (Bell, 2001) An example of social change is my ongoing endeavor to enhance the well-being of my colleagues through a self-driven promotion of healthy lifestyles. Weekly, I provide fresh fruits and water to my team, aiming to motivate them to embrace more nutritious choices and engage in weight management. Residing in Texas, a state consistently ranking highest obesity rates in the United States, I am determined and committed to advocating for transformation while contributing to advancing the community in which I reside. I also coach my diabetic patients by educating them on the transformative impact of minor adjustments leading to substantial habitual changes. By sharing my methodologies, I advocate for reducing A1C levels, concurrently elucidating this condition’s immediate and enduring repercussions. Additionally, I strive to cultivate awareness regarding the relationship between ability and disability, emphasizing the profound impact of present actions on future outcomes. Another example of social change is my current involvement in advocating for inclusion and understanding in the community for all individuals with Autism. I volunteer with typical children and facilitate interactions with atypical children to help them feel included in the community while encouraging them to practice social skills. This interaction also allows non-autistic children to interact with these children and helps them understand that it is okay to be different. In conclusion, Walden University’s emphasis on social change ensures that students are equipped with academic knowledge and empowered to contribute positively to society by addressing social issues and improving communities through creativity, leadership, and professional development. My aspiration as a nurse is to consistently inspire others through my journey of self-improvement. I aim to offer hope and encouragement to individuals during every interaction, providing them with something valuable from our encounter and applying it in their lives and the lives of others.
