ENG 101: Research Paper: Grading Rubric

Students will be graded on the following criteria:

Introduction:

1. How well do you “set up” your essay in your introduction?
2. Do you have a clearly defined thesis statement in your introduction?
3. Is the voice and tone of your narrative confident and effective? Are you making a claim?
4. Is your paper “solution” based? This doesn’t have to be in your introduction, but it can/should be.

Body Paragraphs:

1. Are your sentences clearly written? Are they choppy or smooth? Are you using your speaking voice?
2. Are there mistakes in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure? Is your paper error free?
3. Are you writing with confidence? Does your “style” of writing fit with the topic?
4. Do the points you make in your body paragraphs align with your thesis?
5. Do your sources support what you are saying, or are you supporting the source?
6. Are your in-text citations done correctly? Very important!
7. Are you quoting, paraphrasing or summarizing effectively?
8. Are your points well sequenced?
9. Each individual paragraph should stand on its own, but all body paragraphs should transition into one another nicely, all of which re-enforce your thesis.

Conclusion:

1. Is your conclusion a strength to your paper? Is this paragraph your closing argument?
2. Is your solution clearly defined and supported?
3. Is your thesis re-enforced?

The MLA:

1. Do you have a complete Works Cited page that meets all the requirements?
2. Are your In-text citations accurate?
3. Are you in compliance with all requireme
