In Validity in Interpretation by E. D. Hirsch in section (e) of “Understanding, Interpretation, and Criticism,” Hirsch indicates that his purpose is “to defend the right of literary criticism (or any other criticism based on a broad generic idea) to be as ‘literary’ or ‘unliterary’ as it pleases and still to qualify as objective knowledge and objective valuation.” Hirsch notes that there is a subjective element even to “following a particular method or adopting a particular vocabulary and set of criteria.” He goes on to note that this type of criticism is extrinsic because the primary reference point for the criticism is whatever the critic deems pertinent in establishing the criteria. This final item leads to validation, which is “the process which shows that in a particular case…knowledge [of a text’s meaning] has probably been achieved.” Please develop an initial post where you apply a particular form of literary criticism to your own creative work (a contemporary novel about identity and self-worth). This discussion can be broad or sweeping (with few direct quotes from the source text), but it should include some references/quotations of support from secondary sources.
