Each breath is one component of the complex process of respiration that involves intake and movement of air in and out of the lungs, diffusion of gases between the alveoli and the blood, and transport of oxygen to and carbon dioxide from all cells in the body. Because every physiologic function depends on the respiratory function to supply oxygen and to remove carbon dioxide, breathing is often considered tantamount to one’s life force.
