MNU22016 Assignment Brief

The module is assessed using two components A and B which every student is required to complete in full:

A. Part 1 – Complete Making Every Contact Count (MECC) 8 Online ELearning Modules and all Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) via HSE Land Platform by 18th March 2026.

Part 2 – Attendance at 2-hour skills workshop and submission of MECC Certificate of completion to be submitted by 4pm 26th March 2026.

B. Individual Poster to be submitted by 4pm 23rd April 2026.

APA 7th edition Referencing System for use by the School of Nursing and Midwifery 2025-2026.

Making Every Contact Count (MECC) 18th March 2026.

  1. Every student is required to complete the online MECC component incorporating eight x 30-minute eLearning modules available on the HSE Land platform.
  2. Following completion of each module, you must pass a short exam of 5 questions to receive your MECC certificate.
  3. The pass rate is 80%. Students need to obtain this grade to pass the online assessment. Students can repeat the online assessment as often as required to pass it.
  4. Once this Part has been completed in full, a Certificate of Completion will be automatically generated for every student which students are required to print off and bring to tutorial class.

Component A – Part 2 

Making Every Contact Count (MECC) 26th March 2026 by 4pm.

  1. Every student is required to attend a Two-Hour Tutorial Workshop on MECC (Mandatory)
  2. Students are required to bring a printed copy of their Certificate of Completion to the tutorial workshop for MECC facilitators to sign on full completion of the workshop.
  3. The signed Certificate of Completion must be uploaded to the MNU22016 Blackboard folder by 26th March 2026.
  4. The Making Every Contact Count component of MNU22016 is deemed passed once the signed Certificate of Completion has been uploaded to Blackboard by the deadline, 26th March 2026.
  5. Issue and Submission of MECC Certificate (Complete/Incomplete).

Component B

Individual Poster Online Submission Week by 23rd April 2026 4pm 

Poster Format A poster is a graphically based approach to presenting information. The student is required to submit an individual poster, online, related to the students’ discipline/profession.  

With reference to your discipline/profession, create a poster presenting an integrated approach on ONE (1) of the following themes;  

  1. The role of the nurse/midwife in meeting the expressed spiritual needs of a patient/client/service user in everyday practice.
  2. The role of the nurse/midwife in promoting informed consent in everyday practice.
  3. The role of the nurse/midwife in maintaining cultural competence in everyday practice.
  4. The utility and application of either Quantitative OR Qualitative research for advancing evidence-based nursing or midwifery practice.
  5. The role of nurse/midwife in promoting partnership and collaboration in healthcare.

NB: An integrative approach means that students are required to draw on relevant aspects of the module content for the purposes of completing this assignment.  NB: A pass must be achieved in the MECC MCQ. The MECC Certificate of completion must be submitted and a pass secured for a poster submission to achieve an overall pass for this module assessment.

Where a student fails or is deemed to be incomplete in any of the assessment components, it will only be necessary to retake the component(s) in which a fail/incomplete has been awarded.

A. Part 1: Making Every Contact Count (MECC)

MECC Format – Online Assessment Submission (Pass / Fail)

MECC is a national health behaviour change framework that sets out interventions to support lifestyle behaviour change in persons with chronic disease to support improved health care patient/client/service user outcomes.

MECC is a framework to help ALL patients make healthier lifestyle choices, not just those who already have a chronic illness/disease.

Irrespective of what the person is seeing their health professional for, the health professional is encouraged to use these consultations to ask the person about their lifestyle behaviours (risk factors) to prevent chronic disease, as well as manage these behaviours in people who already have a chronic disease.

The students will receive a total of six hours of contact (FOUR (4) hours online and TWO (2) hour tutorial workshops) concerning the topic.

MCQ Assessment Submission

  1. Students engage in FOUR (4) hrs of designated online work during the first week of Module delivery in addition to optional student effort and input to complete the MECC MCQ assessment tasks.
  2. Students are required to answer 40 questions in this online assessment through Blackboard that relate to the following areas: Introduction to behaviour change, Tobacco free, Alcohol and Drug use, Get Ireland Active, Healthy Food for Life, talking about Overweight and Obesity, Promoting Mental Health and Well-being, Skills into Practice.
  3. Students need to score the equivalent of 80% to pass the assessment.
  4. Students can attempt to complete the assessment any number of times.
  5. Students need to print off a certificate of completion before undertaking the tutorial workshop.

A student will be deemed to be incomplete should a student fail to undertake the MCQ assessments related to all modules.

A. Part 2- Additional Details – Attendance at MECC Tutorial Workshop

    1. Student attendance is mandatory, and every student is required to attend this TWO (2) hour skills workshop in full.
    2. A student will be deemed to be incomplete should a student fail to attend the tutorial workshop.
    3. Non-submission of the MECC signed certificate will result in a fail grade.

B. Poster Submission Additional Details

What Makes a Good Poster?

A good poster should be:

  1. A legible account: A poster should be legible with a design that is easy to follow.   
  2. A structured account: A poster should have a beginning, middle and end to direct the reader’s attention.
  3. A good summary of the topic: A poster must condense current research available on a topic to highlight the main points of a topic. Students should use the module reading list, reference resources and other recommended readings on each theme.
  4. A critical and analytical account of topic: A poster should show an integrative approach comparing different ethical, nursing, midwifery, legal, psychological, or sociological perspectives (where relevant) on your chosen theme so that the reader can get an idea of the complexity of thought on the subject through appropriate and accurate evidence for argument.
  5. A conclusion on the topic: A poster should present a summary argument – or an assessment of the literature on the chosen the topic. The argument must be substantiated with reference to relevant research already referred to in poster.
  6. A referenced account: The poster should be referenced using the APA 7th Style Referencing System as adapted for use by the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
