Synthesis Paper

The transition from registered nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) represents a significant step in advancing professional knowledge, clinical competence, and leadership development in nursing practice (Minnick & Marlow, 2022). Similarly, I began my RN to BSN program with the goal of improving my nursing practice while continuing to work full-time and care for my family. These responsibilities needed me to take one course at a time to maintain a manageable balance between work, school, and personal life, while remaining focused and successful throughout the program. I enrolled in courses at each start date to maintain steady progress. Despite having instances where I needed to pause briefly due to family and financial challenges, I remained committed to completing the program and advancing my education. Courses such as NURS 3345, Role Transition to Professional Nursing, introduced me to the expectations of the professional nurse and laid the foundation for my academic and professional growth.

Before the RN-BSN Program

Before starting the RN to BSN program, my practice was primarily task-oriented and focused on completing assigned duties such as medication administration and documentation. However, I did not fully understand the importance of integrating research and evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is now recognized as a cornerstone of modern nursing as it integrates research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to improve patient outcomes (Potter et al., 2025). One significant change in my behavior is my shift from routine-based care to evidence-based practice. After completing NURS 4325 (Nursing Research), I began to actively seek current research and clinical guidelines to support my decisions. For example, when caring for patients with chronic conditions in the rehabilitation unit, I now consider best practices and updated interventions rather than relying solely on past experience. Another change is my attitude toward collaboration. Before the program, I tended to work more independently and only communicated with other healthcare professionals when necessary. However, I developed a better understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork. I now actively collaborate with other professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.

Lifelong Learning

The RN to BSN program has strengthened my identity as a lifelong learner. Nursing is a constantly evolving profession that requires continuous learning to keep up with advancements in healthcare. Through courses such as Nursing Research, I have developed a deeper understanding of the importance of staying current with research and best practices. I now actively engage in continuing education through workplace training programs and independent learning. Changes in my behavior include that I now seek out learning opportunities beyond required training, and  I voluntarily review updated clinical guidelines and participate in additional training to improve my knowledge and skills. In addition, my critical thinking has improved. I now analyze patient conditions more deeply and consider multiple factors when making decisions.

Novice to Expert

Furthermore, the program has supported my progression from a novice to a more experienced and professional nursing expert by developing advanced skills, confidence, and leadership abilities. Education plays a critical role in helping nurses move toward expertise by strengthening their clinical judgment and decision-making skills (Lamichhane, 2025). Through the Leadership and Management course, I gained a better understanding of leadership principles and the importance of effective decision-making in nursing practice. One significant change in my behavior is my increased confidence in clinical decision-making. In the past, I relied heavily on others for guidance. Now, I assess patient conditions more independently and take appropriate actions when needed. Another change is my growing interest in mentorship and leadership. I now support new nurses by guiding them through patient care processes, documentation, and time management. This demonstrates my transition toward a more experienced role within the healthcare team. Therefore, the RN to BSN program has provided me with the tools necessary to continue progressing toward becoming an expert nurse.

Synthesis of Role Transition to Professional Nursing

The program has significantly influenced my role transition into professional nursing. Initially, my philosophy of nursing was rooted in compassion and a desire to help vulnerable populations. While I still hold these values, my understanding of nursing has expanded to include leadership, evidence-based practice, and professional accountability. I have come to appreciate that nursing is not only a calling but also a professional discipline grounded in knowledge, ethics, and evidence-based practice. NURS 3345, Role Transition to Professional Nursing, played a key role in shaping this perspective by helping me understand the expectations and responsibilities of a professional nurse.

One example of change in my practice is my increased focus on patient education. I now take time to explain diagnoses, medications, and discharge instructions to patients and their families. Aremu et al. (2022) note that patient education empowers patients to participate in their care and improves health outcomes. Another example is my stronger commitment to ethical practice and patient advocacy. I now prioritize patient autonomy, confidentiality, and fairness in all aspects of care. I advocate for patients when they are unable to speak for themselves and ensure that they receive respectful and equitable treatment. The transition reflects my growth from a task-oriented nurse to a professional who values holistic, patient-centered care and actively contributes to improving the healthcare system.

Evaluation

Overall, the RN to BSN program has been a transformative experience, enhancing my knowledge, skills, and confidence as a nurse. One aspect of the program that worked well for me was its flexibility. The ability to take courses online allowed me to balance my education with work and family responsibilities. However, I would suggest improvement in providing additional financial support resources for students. Managing tuition while supporting a family can be challenging, and increased financial assistance would help students succeed. One aspect of the program that I would not want to see changed is its strong emphasis on evidence-based practice. Courses such as Nursing Research were particularly valuable in helping me understand how to apply research to clinical practice. Evidence-based practice is essential for improving patient outcomes and maintaining high standards of care (Naz & Ganaie, 2023). Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend this program to other nurses because it promotes professional growth, enhances clinical competence, and prepares nurses for leadership roles.

Conclusion

My journey through the RN to BSN program has significantly transformed my nursing practice, philosophy, and career goals. I have evolved from a task-oriented nurse to a professional who values evidence-based practice, lifelong learning, and leadership. This program has strengthened my commitment to providing high-quality patient-centered care and has prepared me for future opportunities in nursing. I remain dedicated to continuing my education and contributing to the advancement of the nursing profession.

You have been reflecting on changes you have undergone since beginning this program in each of your Journal entries in this course. Now you will synthesize those reflections, plus any other insights into a paper articulating your RN to BSN educational journey. You will use your module Journal entries as well as examples from other RN BSN courses to construct the Synthesis paper.

Objectives

Synthesis Paper in a reflective activity comprised of your experience in the RN BSN program.

You will address your experiences before the RN BSN program, you as a lifelong learner, you in the continuum of novice to expert in the professional nursing role, an account of your role transition to a professional nurse, and an evaluation of the program.

The Synthesis Paper will reflect your understanding and use of APA format and scholarly writing.

Rubric –Synthesis Paper

The following rubric will be used to grade the Synthesis Paper.  The paper has 6 sections:

The paper must have title page, reference page, plus no more than 4 pages that address the 6 sections of the paper outlined in the grading rubric.  So with the title page, 4 pages for the body of the paper, and the reference page, the Synthesis Paper must not be more than 6 total pages using 12-point Times Roman font.

 

The first 2 grading criteria noted in the rubric below apply to all sections of the paper. APA format, scholarly writing, grammar and spelling are graded in each section.  Use Spell Check and Grammar Check!

 

In-text citations are required to support each section when you discuss the RN BSN courses or the program.  Points will be deducted if this information is not detailed and referenced in the document and on the reference page. References need to be evidence-based if you choose to reference literature instead of information in RN BSN courses.

Instructions

Study the rubric to determine the expectations for each section of the paper. Notice that you are required to cite at least one research article or specific RN-BSN course topic or activity for each section. Locate and record citations for articles you may want to reference, and skim the articles to review the contents. Create an outline that incorporates your main ideas into each section. Follow the outline and the rubric to write a rough draft. You may want to draft your paper by hand, or you might prefer to “type as you go,” editing and making changes both during and after writing the draft.

Your final document should include a title page, all 6 sections of the paper as identified in the grading rubric, and a reference page. Including title and reference pages the paper is not to exceed 6 pages.  Part of scholarly writing is to be concise in your writing.  The Coach is instructed to grade the title page, the first 4 pages of the body of the paper, and the reference page.  If the Synthesis Paper is longer than 6 total pages points may be deducted based on grading rubric sections that were not addressed in the allotted 6 pages.

The title page and paper are in APA format.

Your writing should be in first person, and is expected to include opinions and personal statements, but have a professional tone. It should flow as a narrative, mostly chronological description your progression through the program including your reflections on specific nursing courses and reflections throughout the program.

Be sure to include a final page titled “References,” and cite your references in correct APA formats. Reference list will include any RN-BSN courses or activities in APA format.

Each section must contain 3-4 well constructed, grammatically correct sentences supported by citations and references as appropriate. Ensure that your writing is informative and interesting, not redundant.

After your write your paper, set it aside and review it again several hours later or the next day. Read it from an objective viewpoint to see if it flows and makes sense. If not, make necessary changes. Have someone else proofread your paper both for content and grammatical accuracy is a vital step. Read your paper out loud before submitting it.  Hearing yourself read your own written words can find those last minute mistakes or incomplete thoughts before you submit the paper for grading.
