**NOTE: You will use the work of art that you submitted to your instructor for approval.
YOU WILL USE ALL THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES FOR THE MEDIA/DISCIPLINE THAT YOU CHOOSE. These are the terms that you learned in the chapter assignments. Review and study the necessary terms; you will be using each of the terms. Many of those are found under “How It Is Put Together” in each chapter.
Please be certain to complete Paragraphs 4 and 5 as directed. Make sure to qualify your personal evaluation as specified so that your opinion is included as part of the analysis.
This paper will be a minimum of 750 words.
With the Formal Critique submission, include a visual representation of the event attended. If you attend a museum you will include the artwork and museum (selfies… yay!); a snapshot of the program for dance, music, or theater performance which should include the artist(s), venue, and date of your attendance. Be certain to include the name of the work you chose and when and where you saw it. I strongly recommend that you attend in person. If you cannot, there are options below.
If you have any questions about this assignment, please contact the instructor ahead of time. Your choice MUST be approved.
PARAGRAPH #1: DESCRIPTIVE PHASE
Identify and Describe the artwork you have selected. Write your initial response (see Note 1 below) to the work. What do you think the artwork is about (i.e., its story)? What message (i.e., idea, meaning) are you receiving from the work? You may find both.
PARAGRAPH #2: ANALYTICAL PHASE A
Analyze the artist’s use of the Elements of Art in the artwork. Locate and write about specific examples (see Note 2 below) found in the artwork. Think about how the artist’s use of the Elements affects your response to the artwork for Paragraph #5.
PARAGRAPH #3: ANALYTICAL PHASE B
Analyze the artist’s use of the Principles of Art/Design in the artwork. Locate and write about specific examples (see Note 2 below) found in the artwork. Think about how the artist’s use of the Principles affects your response to the artwork for Paragraph #5.
PARAGRAPH #4: INTERPRETATIVE PHASE
Using the information provided by the book, event program, or museum label information as research, write about how the artwork fits in with the body of work and the intent (interpretation) of the artist. If you do not have information about that, continue to provide an interpretation of what you think the artist was trying to convey. DO NOT CONDUCT ANY ADDITIONAL RESEARCH FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT; THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER.
PARAGRAPH #5: EVALUATIVE PHASE
A) In CONCLUSION, state whether your personal response was changed by your formal analysis (the Elements and Principles) and the research from the text. Be sure to include more than this simple statement. Qualify your response with reasons why (how), or why not, #2, #3, and #4 affected your response.
B) Additionally, by attending a theater production, visiting a museum, attending a dance performance, theatrical performance, or musical performance, you support the arts community. Even if you attend virtually, think about the importance of having this availabe in your community. After your personal response to the work of art or event you chose, think about the work and where you saw it. Write a few concluding sentences that demonstrate your understanding of the value of the work/event and its impact on the community. DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE ABOUT THIS.
NOTE on this assignment and on writing in general:
1. First responses should be just that. Resist the urge to over-think this. React and respond and describe that feeling or response in your writing. If the artwork tells you a story, then communicate that story in your writing. If it makes you feel a specific emotion, then express that in your writing, and explain why.
2. You WILL give specific examples of how and where the artist uses them in the artwork. Do not simply list the Elements and Principles used in the artwork. Additionally, the examples you provide must reflect the artist’s use and application of the Elements and Principles in the making of the artwork, NOT ABOUT THE STORY, MEANING, OR RESPONSES.
A well constructed paragraph will be at least 5 sentences long. Also, all material related to the topic of the paragraph remains in that paragraph. You may refer back to that information in other places in your essay, but introduce the information in its appropriate place.
Essays and individual paragraphs have a beginning, middle, and end. In this essay, the beginning is your initial response (PARAGRAPH 1), the middle represents your analysis and research (PARAGRAPHS 2, 3, and 4), and the conclusion (PARAGRAPH 5) ties back to the beginning of the essay.
NO CONTRACTIONS ARE APPROPRIATE IN FORMAL WRITING. For example, use will not, do not use won’t. College-level grammar is expected.
