NRS 465 Topic 2 Scholarly Activities
Overview
One of the scholarly activities I engaged in during my practicum experience at Cook Children’s Health Care System was attending a Quality Improvement Committee meeting, focusing on enhancing patient safety, improving clinical outcomes, and promoting evidence-based practice. The target audience included healthcare professionals responsible for quality management, patient safety initiatives, and organizational performance improvement. Participating in these meetings provided valuable insight into how healthcare organizations use data, evidence, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve patient care. The experience strengthened my understanding of quality improvement principles and expanded my knowledge of the nurse’s role in supporting safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
Problem
The scholarly activity was designed to address several challenges commonly encountered in healthcare organizations. Variations in clinical practice, preventable patient harm, and inconsistent adherence to evidence-based guidelines continue to affect healthcare quality and patient outcomes. These issues can lead to increased healthcare costs, reduced patient satisfaction, longer hospital stays, and poorer health outcomes (Kumah, 2025). Healthcare organizations must continuously monitor performance indicators and implement improvement strategies to ensure safe and effective care delivery.
Alexander et al. (2022) note that one way nurses can strengthen their leadership skills is by participating in quality improvement activities. These activities provide an opportunity to learn to interpret high-quality data, identify opportunities for improvement, contribute to evidence-based changes that enhance patient outcomes, and improve communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.NRS 465 Topic 2 Scholarly Activities
Solution
The Quality Improvement Committee meeting addressed these concerns through a structured approach to evaluating healthcare performance and identifying opportunities for improvement. Committee members reviewed quality indicators, analyzed trends, discussed patient safety concerns, and developed action plans to address identified issues. Current evidence-based interventions implemented in the institution were also examined to assess their effectiveness in improving outcomes, thus supporting continuous quality improvement and promoting the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
Opportunity
This scholarly activity provided an opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the processes used to improve healthcare quality within a large pediatric healthcare system. One objective of the activity was to increase understanding of organizational quality metrics and their impact on patient outcomes. Another objective was to strengthen knowledge of evidence-based decision-making and quality improvement methodologies. These objectives were achieved through active participation in committee discussions and the review of organizational performance data.
Attending the meeting enhanced my professional development as a nurse by increasing my awareness of the leadership responsibilities associated with quality improvement. I gained a greater appreciation for the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals and the role of data in guiding clinical decisions. The experience also improved my ability to analyze healthcare problems from a systems perspective and consider solutions that support both patient outcomes and organizational goals. This scholarly activity will help me become a more effective nurse by improving my ability to contribute to evidence-based practice initiatives, quality improvement projects, and interdisciplinary teamwork throughout my professional career.
