Rationale for
assessment task
The primary objective of this assessment is to utilise the knowledge you have acquired to
discuss the diseases with the highest prevalence in Australia and worldwide. Additionally, you
will be tasked with identifying health behaviours that contribute significantly to the elevated
prevalence of a disease within specific populations. Lastly, you will explore and explain
examples of best practices in social health policies from around the world that effectively
reduce the risk associated with your identified disease. Through this assessment, you will
demonstrate your ability to apply theoretical and practical knowledge to address public health
challenges on both national and global scales.

Task detail Select one of the specified burdens of disease from the provided list and address the following
questions pertaining to the chosen disease. Ensure consistency by focusing on the same disease
throughout your entire report. You may wish to focus on a specific disease within the
overarching burden of disease, for example for Diabetes you could give an overview of diabetes
and then focus on Type Two Diabetes Mellitus.

Referring to your above selected disease burden, provide an overview of the disease prevalence
and impact in terms of mortality and morbidity on both the global and Australian populations.
Include at least one image of a graph or table showing prevalence of your selected disease
burden.

Explain the health behaviours that can increase the risk of this disease and analyse how these
behaviours intersect with determinants of health.

Identify best practice social health policy and/or strategies that have been implemented either
locally, nationally, or globally to decrease the incidence of the chosen disease. Concepts related
to health promotion and primary health care may also be discussed in terms of the social health
policy. (One example for Social health policy or strategies could be Slip, slop, slap for reducing
skin cancer).
