A few months ago, on the basis of your experience in a hospital business office, you were hired into a managerial position. You were
just starting to feel comfortable in the position when the administrator walked into your office to tell you the department is
outgrowing its quarters and must start planning an expansion project. The administrator also confided that she has never been
involved in such a project and that she does not have time to do any research. She wants you to do the initial legwork and put
together a briefing that will help her prepare a presentation for the board.
Preparation
Review Ch. 1, “Rethinking the Facility Planning Process,” of Healthcare Facility Planning: Thinking Strategically found in the Wk 1
Learning Activities folder for more information on producing facilities that are responsive to the needs of patients, caregivers, and
payers now and in the future.
Using the University Library and Google Scholar, research:
• The evolution of health care facility design in the U.S. over the last 200 years
• The five traditional project process groups
• The concept of “renovate or replace?”
Assignment Deliverable
Create a 6-8 slide PowerPoint presentation that summarizes the process of facility planning in which you:
• Present a short history of health care facility design in the U.S. from 1800 to the present (citation- at least 2 slides)
• Describe the five traditional PMBOK process groups (citation)
• Discuss Hayward’s emphasis on predesign planning (citation)
• Examine the decision process for determining whether to renovate or replace a health care facility (citation)
Cite at least 3 peer-reviewed, scholarly, or similar references (all listed references need to be cited in the presentation).
Presentation expectations – the slides should be highlights with pictures and color, the details are in the speaker notes
