As a school counselor, it is important to have a clear understanding of the mandated reporting requirements for the state in which you practice. Staying up-to-date on required training for mandated reporting should be a fundamental component of your professional practice.
Part 1: Mandated Reporting Training
Using the link in the topic resources, explore the Child Welfare Information Gateway website to locate specific state information on mandatory reporting and required training for educators. Complete the designated mandated reporting training for the state in which you will complete your practicum. The training length with vary by state, be sure to allocate the appropriate amount of time to complete it.

As you complete the training, consider the following:
Procedures for reporting child abuse and/or neglect
Laws related to your state’s reporting procedures
Ways to keep children safe, community resources, and methods for prevention and collaboration.
Your practicum site’s specific protocol for mandated reporting.

- After completing the training, create a 10-12-slide digital presentation (not including a title slide and reference slide) that addresses the following:
- Describe the signs of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.
- Explain the protocols and procedures in your state for reporting potential child abuse and/or neglect.
Explain the protocols and procedures at your practicum site.
Identify resources within your school and community for the prevention and intervention of child abuse and neglect.
Explain the school counselor’s role in mandated reporting.
