This is a 2-piece assignment. If you miss doing any part of this assignment, there will be a 50 percent deduction in the total grade for this final.
Part A
You’ve collectively pieced together, and articulated well, the essential message that I would like most to convey in this class. An excellent educator is open to seeing the potential and strengths of every child. Differences are not deficits. Diversity enriches our classrooms. And teachers can play an important role in the development of the child, not just academically, but as they develop and grow as human beings. This week’s chapter on Social and Emotional Development is an important piece of that story. After you’ve read Chapter 12, and watched the four videos this week, I’d like for you to talk about self-concept. We learned in the readings that children in middle childhood are developing their sense of self – confidence (or inferiority), self-efficacy (or feelings of helplessness), motivation (or lack thereof). How can teachers support a child’s Social and Emotional Development? Do you have a story about a teacher who told you that you weren’t good enough or that you couldn’t do something – and had that affect your self concept? Or, do you have a story about a teacher who was particularly supportive and helped you with your self-image? Do you think that a teacher’s biases, even implicit or unconscious biases, can affect how they interact with children? Can that affect children’s self-concept? What does that mean for us as educators?
