One key theory— Cognitive Evaluation Theory (CET)—explains how extrinsic rewards, such as trophies, recognition, grades, or money, can either enhance or reduce intrinsic motivation. Rewards may have a controlling function, shifting attention toward external approval or pressure, or an informational function, providing feedback that strengthens feelings of competence and autonomy.
In at least 350-400 words, respond to the following:
1. Share a specific example from sports, fitness, academics, work, or your personal life in which an extrinsic reward either increased or decreased your intrinsic motivation to continue an activity. Explain what happened and how your motivation changed.
2. Analyze the reward using Cognitive Evaluation Theory. Did the reward function primarily as controlling or informational? Explain why and discuss how it affected your sense of autonomy, competence, or relatedness.
3. Connect your example to at least one additional motivation theory from the unit: Achievement Motivation, Competence Motivation, or Self-Determination Theory. Explain how that theory helps us better understand your motivation or behavior.
4. Finally, reflect on the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Can they work together effectively, or does one eventually tend to override the other? Support your position using your example and concepts or evidence from the readings.
