The nuclear arms race and MAD (mutually assured destruction) to include the Cuban Missile Crisis
How the Cold War without major military ground conflict in Europe transitioned to two major wars of containment in Asia; The domino theory, Korea, and Vietnam
Finally the collapse of the Soviet Union to include it’s war in Afghanistan paving the way for new longer term conflicts.
