Write an argument paper based upon the writings of philosophers with a focus on an important question, accurately describing ideas, and concluding appropriate to those ideas.
Value philosophical conduct such as fair-mindedness, open-mindedness (the attachment to higher things) and nuanced conclusions (capacity to hold more than one significant idea at the same time, even if they conflict).
ESSAY PROMPT
You have learned about three broad approaches to ethics: utilitarianism, Kantianism, and virtue ethics. Which of these theories do you think is strongest? Choose one and defend it. Your essay should be organized as follows:
Section 1: Theory. Explain the theory and give an example of your own that helps illustrate or clarify the theory.
Section 2: Objection. What in your view is the strongest objection to this moral theory? Explain the objection and give an example of your own that helps illustrate or clarify the objection.
Section 3: Resolution. Explain why you think the objection fails or why you think the theory is still likely to be true in spite of the objection.
To be clear, if you choose to defend utilitarianism, for example, then your essay will only be about utilitarianism. Kantianism and virtue theory will not appear in your essay. Similarly, if you choose to defend virtue theory, Kantianism and utilitarianism will not appear in your paper. This is not a compare/contrast essay. Instead, I am giving you freedom of choice to focus on the theory you find most attractive. Some of you will write papers about utilitarianism, some of you will write papers about Kantianism, and some of you will write papers about virtue ethics.
