Add to this the qualities that make a story or poem a product of the literary imagination, e.g. setting, point of view, or theme, and you have what I call “The Three Qs”:
1. QUOTATIONS
2. Literary QUALITIES
3. QUESTIONS
You should build every discussion post–whether you are writing about fiction, poetry, plays, or essays–around quotations, literary qualities, and questions. If you focus on the Three Qs, you will be paying attention to the language — the actual words — of the literary text.
DO include and discuss at least two brief quotes from the assigned text,
DO use the terminology in Charters’ “Elements of Fiction” or the informational readings on poetry when you analyze stories or poems.
DO pose your own questions about the texts and develop your own interpretation by attempting to answer them.
DO edit each post for correct grammar and mechanics.
DO include an MLA-style Works Cited list and use parenthetical page numbers for stories and essays or line numbers for poems.
Do break your discussion post into paragraphs. It’s much easier on my tired old eyes.
DON’T miss deadlines.
DON’T forget the Three Qs – quotations, literary qualities, and questions.
DON’T bother summarizing a text that we have all read.
DON’T post a response before you read it over and check grammar as well as MLA format.
DON’T copy anyone else’s words or ideas about a text from a website or other source. If you feel compelled to consult Sparknotes or similar sites, be sure to give that source credit through an MLA-style citation..
