Early literacy relies on appropriately preparing young children for reading. As young children are exposed to letters and sounds, they begin to build a foundation for phonemic awareness. This step is critical in preparing for the sequential order of reading instruction. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension build off each other to provide appropriate development for literacy. Imagine you have been asked to create a digital presentation and video to help teachers understand the importance of early literacy and reading education in the United States. It has been requested that the information be presented in a 12-15 slide digital presentation. Include the following in the presentation:
Describe the scope and importance of reading education history in the United States.
Provide an overview of the Science of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope.
Provide an overview of the Five Pillars of Reading Instruction based on the Science of Reading research (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension).
Discuss why it is important to instruct students in the components of reading in sequence by providing examples of difficulties students may experience with reading if this does not happen (e.g., What happens to fluency if students have not received instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics?).
Discuss the importance of explicit reading instruction in Grades K-3, including the role of cognitive development, brain-based learning, the Science of Reading, and Scarborough’s Reading Rope.
Discuss the effects that dyslexia can have on reading success.
Provide at least two specific examples of reading instructional strategies that promote inclusivity, responsiveness, and address the diverse literacy needs of all students. Consider students’ socioeconomic status, cultural background, English learners (ELs), and students with exceptionalities, including giftedness.
Reflect on two specific challenges that may arise while planning a reading lesson to meet the diverse reading needs of the students in your classroom and describe how the instructional strategies you identified can promote positive outcomes for all students.
Presenter’s notes are required for each content slide. Presentation must include a title slide at the beginning, and a reference slide with documentation of resources at the end.
