Recently we have talked a lot about agriculture and its relationship with the environment. One of the biggest impacts has on the earth is its use of water. California alone uses billions of gallons every year from the Colorado river system to irrigate crops which has had negative effects on that river system. Here in Hawai‘i, water usage and water rights is a very important issue, as many rivers and streams have been changed and/or diverted for decades, in some cases for over a century. Those changes to water flow have benefited some, but also has sometimes hurt ecosystems as well as the people who depended on that original flow of water. Watch this following video about water diversion issues in East Maui and write a 1 to 2 page response to the video, writing a short summary of what the video was about and also making sure to address the following questions
-Who is involved with this water issue?
-What does each side of the issue want? (Core goals)
-What is the relationship like between native Hawaiians and water?
– How do you feel about this issue?
– What do you think should be done about complex water issues like what happened in East Maui? (Please explain why)
