Aim: Learning how to present your ideas clearly in writing. Literature search

and analyzing scholarly articles, knowing APA writing guidelines, and planning

  • Each student will individually write a paper on a neuropsychological topic.

The topic needs to be approved by instructor by mid-semester.

  • Late papers will not be accepted except for “accommodation.” If you have one

of the other four exceptions specified earlier, you can make sure to write your

paper ahead of time to avoid lateness.

  • The paper should follow these guidelines:

o Four pages long exactly, excluding cover page and reference page,

arranged with three major sections:

Introduction, which (a) introduces the topic and (b) specifies the aim of

the paper (which aim should be shown as met in the conclusion of the

paper). Or,

Abstract, which is a synopsis of the entire paper including the

conclusion, in past tense

o Note: An introduction is different than an abstract.

o Choose either one, and no more than half a page

Discussion (main body) or give it a more original but relevant title. This

section is your main discussion and must include:

o An introduction to the topic

o Definitions of any terms used

o Justifying what you say by citations—the audience should not

ask: “how did s/he know that?”

o At the most, one quotation directly in the cited author’s words.

Otherwise, paraphrase please.

o A discussion and critique of the papers you cite: author’s aim,

methodology, any limitations

o If you add your own analysis, own it and then justify it. For

example: “I suspect because of xxx, the outcome could be xxx”

o Preferably include the clinical relevance

o Include the social or cultural relevance

o May include the spiritual or transpersonal if justified

o May have subtitles (flush left, italicized)

o May include treatment methods

o Should include your future recommendations

Conclusion: Repeat the paper’s content very briefly in a couple of

sentences and show that the aim of the paper was metCitations and Reference page APA style:

o Three scholarly articles cited (in the discussion) and referenced

alphabetically (on the reference page) according to APA guidelines.

o Citations must have author/s name/s, year, name of journal, volume,

page/s. Note italics

o You may reference your text as an additional, fourth reference.

o Maximum of two pop, online, or magazine articles if you wish.

o Citations within the paper should match the references in the reference

section.

  • Writing APA format:

o Only double-spaced throughout. Don’t use triple or quadruple space

between section or between paragraphs

o One-inch margin all around

o 12-font throughout. Don’t increase the font of titles and subtitles

o No bold lettering

o Calibri or Times New Roman script

o Do not right flush. Keep the right margin jagged (like this document)

  • The topic of the paper should be unique or an unique aspect of what we

studied in class. The argument should include studied neurological material—

or explain well any new material so that undergraduates understand it; The

clue is: can you verbally repeat what you wrote? Learn to write in simple

language that can be understood by all.
