Networking Opportunities
(for this course, each DQ should have at least 3 references, responses at least 200 words)
This week, you begin to lay the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision, which includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other members of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Week’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success. Finally, you will explain the importance of networking and how it can help you achieve your professional and academic goals.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

PROF ANNOUNCEMENT
Hello everyone,
The below example is also located within your Week 1-course resources without the highlighted APA elements.
I am highlighting the citations and references in this course announcement so that you can view the citations and matching references clearly.
Note: Please be aware this course is not intended to teach you APA. Learning APA is your responsibility. – Walden does offer numerous resources for you, as well I will diligently attempt to assist in building your knowledge base concerning APA within the course announcements and Discussions.
Note: Be aware that numerous future courses will have graded elements that require APA. I encourage you to familiarize yourself now concerning APA utilization. Contact your student advisor for any courses available specific to APA instruction.
Note:Discussion participation is only allowed during the 6-day active discussion period starting on Monday (Day 1) and ending Saturday (Day 6) during the Weeks that Discussions are required. Discussion participation outside of the 6-day active discussion period will not be scored.
In prior discussions I have observed:
- the listing of references and not citing the listed references within the written work
- “Talking about” the listed reference(s), but not citing the source as listed within the references. “Talking about” a listed source without citation is not considered source utilization per APA.
- the citing of a source in the written work and no listing of that reference(s)
Question: So, what exactly is Dr Gatlin expecting me to do regarding citations and the listing of references cited within the written work?
Answer: Per the Discussion Grading Rubric concerning source utilization Dr Gatlin will evaluate for:
Main Post: Three (3) different sources are listed with each of those sources cited in the written work per APA format as indicated within the below Main Post Discussion exemplar. I have highlighted the correct APA citation form. Please note – each source listed is also cited within the written work.
Peer Responses: Two (2) different sources are listed with each of those sources cited in the written work per APA format.
Concerning source utilization, in short – do not list a source and not cite it within the written work; nor cite a source without including it within your reference list.

DISCUSSION EXAMPLE of a Main Post
Main Post <<<<<<< Note you will label the Discussion here
Dr. Gatlin and Classmates,
Azerbaijan and Armenia are neighboring rival countries. In the Nagorno-Karabakh War, lasting six years, the Armenian and Azerbaijani forces battled over the Karabakh region, located in Azerbaijan. Valued for its fresh water supply, the Armenians seized control of the Karabakh region and selfishly limited the water flow in the region. The river supplies 80% of the millions of gallons required for thirsty locals (Ohanyan, 2018).
Guarding the Water
Because the Armenians strictly guard the water reservoir, they deprive Azerbaijani citizens of much-needed water. Every spring, the Armenians flood hundreds of square miles by releasing billions of gallons of water downstream, without consideration for the needs of the Azerbaijani people (Leylekian, 2015). Without water, the local Azerbaijani crops fail, livestock die, and food shortages prevail.
Clean Water
Humans must have access to clean potable water to sustain life and they suffer when water is dirty or unavailable. According to the Global Water Availability Model (GWAM), the world population will increase from 7 billion to 14 billion people by 2095, with over half of humankind facing a water shortage (Hejazi et al, 2013). Currently, converting polluted or salty water into fresh drinking water is not cost-effective on large scales. New, inexpensive, and reliable water purification techniques must be developed to offset the growing global demand for clean water.
Every day, millions around the globe drink water contaminated with bacteria and pollutants. In underdeveloped countries, typhoid and dysentery from unclean water make people very sick, and some die. Normally prevalent in developing countries, people who drink water containing algae and toxic bacteria develop skin and intestine maladies as well as liver, stomach, breathing, and neurological issues. Fertilizers containing nitrates seep into water harming all, particularly infants. These infants may succumb to blue-baby syndrome, characterized by the inability of the blood to carry oxygen (Environmental Protection Agency, n.d.). Today, over 2 billion men, women, and children do not have access to clean water, and the crisis is growing (United Nations, n.d.).

The above example (without the highlighted portions) is also within your Week 1 course resources.
This Discussion exemplar demonstrates sufficient depth and breadth ensuring critical analysis and synthesis – as required per the discussion grading rubric, as well as correct APA use.
I have highlighted APA citations and reference listings for ease of viewing.
==============================
Reminder: Please ensure your two (2) peer responses contain sufficient depth and breadth ensuring critical analysis and synthesis (also required per your discussion grading rubric).
More Tips:
READ THE DISCUSSION INSTRUCTIONS AND GRADING RUBRIC BEFORE YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE DISCUSSION
Attachments, as mentioned in prior course announcements, are not allowed in the discussions, nor will they be scored.
Label your Discussion Post as:
Main Post, Response #1, Response #2
You may participate in the discussions more than required per the rubric; however, label ONLY the discussion postings you wish considered for grading.
Unlabeled Discussion Post leaves the Instructor with no choice but to grade the posts as they are dated. This unfortunately can result in a tremendous value of points being deducted.
UNLABELED DISCUSSION POST will be graded as follows in order of submission date/time:
1st date/time posting is considered your Main Post.
2nd date/time posting is considered your Peer Response #1.
3rd date/time posting is considered your Peer Response #2.
LABELED DISCUSSION POST will be graded as per the identification label you designate (see below)
If you label a Discussion posting Main Post it will be graded as such.
If you label a Discussion posting Peer Response #1 it will be graded as such.
If you label a Discussion posting Peer Response # 2 it will be graded as such.
