In the previous assessment, we discussed three major normative ethical theories, all of which have a fairly long history in Western philosophy. Over the last fifty years or so, these theories have been criticized for overlooking the interests and perspectives of women and minority groups. For instance, some feminist philosophers have argued that traditional normative theories, all developed originally by men, in certain ways are biased toward the experiences of men. Critics have claimed these traditional theories prioritize abstraction over concrete relationships, or sometimes emphasize traits like independence over community.

For this assessment, we’ll explore theories that offer alternative points of view, sometimes reflecting communities and experiences that have been culturally marginalized in writing and thinking about the nature of morality. There are several critical theories to choose from, and we will focus on feminism, queer theory, disability theory, postcolonial theory, and critical race theory. Each of these theories, in addition to expanding the range of cultural experiences and perspectives on ethics, is interested in critically examining social structures and systems of power that sometimes go unnoticed or are taken for granted. The most important goal of critical theories is to understand and overcome obstacles to a more egalitarian society.

Overview

The normative ethical theories you applied in the previous assessment all have a fairly long history in Western philosophy. In the past hundred years or so, other theoretical frameworks were developed to address gaps in traditional normative ethical theory. These critical theories have in common the goal of combatting systemic oppression and liberating society.

For this assessment, you will select a critical theory and apply it to analyze an ethical conflict presented in a scenario you choose. Then you will apply a normative theory to argue for a resolution to the conflict.

In this assessment, you will demonstrate ethical reasoning by making sound decisions, taking appropriate actions with an awareness of the rights and well-being of others, and identifying the impact of personal and professional behavior.

Preparation

Please complete the following before beginning the assessment:

• Review the first three paragraphs of the “Critical Theory” online encyclopedia entry found in the Assessment 3: Critical Theories reading list for a helpful introduction to the origins and purposes of critical theory.
• Then complete the Applied Critical Theory Scenarios media activity.
  • After reviewing the scenarios presented in the media activity, select one to use as the focus for this assessment.
• This assessment will ask you to analyze an ethical conflict and recommend strategies to contribute to its resolution. Access and complete the following media activity to get some practice with conflict management:
  • Riverbend City: Conflict Management.

In a 3–4 page scholarly paper appropriate for a professional audience, complete the following:

1. Describe the primary interest(s) of at least two stakeholders in the ethical conflict posed by the scenario.
   • Explain how these interests are connected and/or opposed.
2. Summarize the key insights of a critical theory applicable to the ethical conflict in the chosen scenario.
   • Explain connections to another critical theory.
3. Analyze the ethical conflict(s) in the chosen scenario.
   • Apply one of the following critical theories: feminism, queer theory, critical race theory, postcolonialism, or disability theory.
4. Apply a traditional theory of normative ethics to resolve the ethical conflict presented in this scenario.
   • Explain how this resolution satisfies certain aspects of another traditional theory of normative ethics.
