Counselors regularly hold space for the suffering and trauma of others. To do so ethically, effectively, and sustainably, wellness must be a professional priority—not just a personal one. The American Counseling Association (ACA, 2014) affirms this by stating:
“Counselors engage in self-care activities to maintain and promote their own emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing to best meet their professional responsibilities.” (ACA Code of Ethics, Introduction to Section C: Professional Responsibilities)
In this assignment, you will explore counselor wellness, assess your current self-care practices, reflect on how the profession impacts mental health professionals, and identify practices that promote ethical, long-term wellness.
