But outside groups definitely judge them, sometimes calling the subculture morbid or insensitive. Within the group, the big rule is to always respect the victims and stick to the actual facts and evidence. The absolute biggest taboo is glorifying killers or treating a real-life tragedy like it’s just cheap entertainment for likes—that will get you kicked out immediately (Bissonnette, 2025).
If you follow the rules and share respectful, well-researched theories, you get major positive sanctions like tons of digital praise, likes, and a real sense of backup from the community. But if you cross the line—like spreading wild, unverified conspiracy theories or being disrespectful to a victim’s family—the negative sanctions hit fast. You’ll get called out publicly, blasted in the comments, and completely banned from the forums, leaving you totally cut off from the group.

subculture I have had exposure to is cosplay culture, which I have mostly learned about through conventions, social media, and entertainment coverage. Cosplay is a subculture where people dress up as characters from anime, video games, movies, or comics and often attend events where they interact with others who share the same interests. Within this subculture, there is a strong belief in creativity, self-expression, and respect for the effort people put into their costumes. There is also an unspoken bias toward originality and accuracy, members often admire detailed, high-quality costumes and the dedication it takes to bring a character to life.
Some common norms in cosplay culture include giving compliments on costumes, asking permission before taking photos, and respecting “consent culture”. A major taboo is disrespecting someone’s character choice or criticizing their body or appearance, as the community generally values inclusivity and positivity. Another important norm is not claiming someone else’s work as your own, especially when costumes are handmade or custom-designed. Positive sanctions for following these norms include praise, recognition on social media, and invitations to collaborate or join group photos. Negative sanctions can include being ignored, called out online, or even asked to leave events if someone behaves disrespectfully or violates community expectations.
