Project Description
You are part of a design team tasked with designing selected structural
elements for a double/multi-storey industrial/commercial building with
a simple steel frame layout and utilizing only steel grade S275.
The floors consist RC slab supported by steel beams and columns.
The roof can be formed from steel trusses.
As a group, you will need to source architectural plans for a typical
two to five-storey industrial/commercial building for which the design
will be based on.
Group Composition
- Minimum 4 and maximum 5 students per group.
- Students will work in groups to design, analyse, and optimise
a steel structural framing system.
Tasks
- Show grid lines.
- Determine all the actions/loads present on the structure.
- Frame up the building by setting out all the structural members.
- Assign spans and supports.
- Identify load paths.
- Calculate ultimate design loads and load-cases.
- Produce a full floor design with complete beam layout and suitable
beam calculations (1 per student). - Produce a roof design with complete beam layout and suitable truss
calculations (1 per student). - Produce 2D framing layout with recommended stability system and
column calculations (1 per student). - Short oral presentation (10 minutes per group) summarizing key
design choices.
Deliverables
- Structural layout plan
- Design calculations (hand or software-assisted)
- Connection detail drawings (can be hand-sketched neatly or drawn with CAD)
- Brief technical report (for items 1, 2 and 3 above) presented in this format:
- Executive Summary
- Introduction
- Design code and references
- Design basis and approach
- Structural Analysis and Design
- Drawings and Details
- Conclusions
- Oral presentation
-END-
