Your attendance in MS-TEAMS (the only one that counts and matters!) and participation in class discussions are vital to your success in this course. The in-class activities will provide ample opportunity for you to share your ideas, thoughts, and experiences with the rest of the class. However, if you are unable to attend my class, please inform me (via email) ahead of time and provide a letter from the university if you are participating in any official events; or if you are unwell, a valid medical certificate from the doctor.
Submission Of Assignments
Assignments are due on the dates specified in my Teaching Schedule. Please be informed that NO LATE SUBMISSION will be accepted, regardless of reason. Therefore, prioritize and plan your work well!

C. Assignment 2: Strategic Case Study On Malaysian Semiconductor Company
Total Marks: 40%
- Presentation: 15%
- Report: 25% (4,500-5,000 words, excluding references and appendices)
Assignment Objectives
This assignment aims to enable students to:
- Analyze strategic management and planning practices within a semiconductor company in Malaysia.
- Understand the real-world application of strategic management principles across different departments within a semiconductor firm.
- Examine how semiconductor companies respond to technological changes, global competition, and supply chain challenges.
- Develop skills in interviewing, data synthesis, and case study analysis.
Assignment Guidelines
- Introduction (Common for All Groups)
Provide an overview of the semiconductor industry in Malaysia, including:
- The importance of the semiconductor industry to Malaysia’s economy and global supply chains.
- Malaysia’s role in the global semiconductor ecosystem (e.g., assembly, testing, design, and manufacturing).
- Key trends and challenges faced by the semiconductor industry, such as:
- Technological advancements (AI chips, advanced packaging, automation)
- Global supply chain disruptions
- Talent shortages and skills gaps
- Increasing global competition
The objectives and purpose of conducting a strategic case study on a Malaysian semiconductor company.
- Case Study Selection
Each group will select one well-known semiconductor company operating in Malaysia and develop a strategic case study based on primary insights gathered through interviews.
Examples of companies may include:
- Intel Malaysia
- Infineon Technologies Malaysia
- STMicroelectronics Malaysia
- Texas Instruments Malaysia
- Unisem Group
- Inari Amertron
Students are encouraged to conduct 3–4 interviews with representatives from different departments within the selected company.
- Company Background and Strategic Context Each group should provide:
- A brief history of the selected semiconductor company.
- Overview of the company’s core business activities (e.g., chip design, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing).
- Market positioning within the global semiconductor value chain.
- Growth trajectory and key milestones.
- The company’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
- Strategic Management and Planning in Practice
Based on interviews with company representatives, analyze the following areas:
Strategic Vision and Leadership
- How does the company’s leadership approach strategic planning and long-term competitiveness?
- What role do technology, innovation, and R&D play in shaping corporate strategy?
Departmental Roles and Contributions
Examine how different departments contribute to the company’s strategic objectives, such as:
- Research and Development (R&D) – innovation and technology development
- Operations / Manufacturing – production efficiency and quality control
- Marketing / Business Development – market expansion and customer relationships • Human Resources – talent development and workforce capabilities
Challenges and Strategic Responses
Identify major challenges faced by the company, such as:
- Global semiconductor supply chain disruptions
- Rapid technological change and innovation cycles
- Competition from global semiconductor firms
- Talent shortages in semiconductor engineering
Explain how the company strategically responds to these challenges.
- Analysis Using Strategic Tools and Frameworks
Students must apply at least two strategic management frameworks, such as:
- SWOT Analysis – to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
- Porter’s Five Forces – to analyze competitive dynamics within the semiconductor industry.
- PESTEL Analysis – to evaluate the external business environment.
- Value Chain Analysis – to examine the firm’s technological and operational capabilities.

Based on the analysis and interview findings, groups should provide:
- Key strategic insights regarding the company’s competitive positioning within the semiconductor industry.

- Talent development and skills upgrading
- Global supply chain resilience
- Expansion into higher-value semiconductor activities
Recommendations should be practical, realistic, and supported by analysis.
- Conclusion
Summarize the main findings of the strategic analysis, highlighting the company’s:
- Strategic strengths and weaknesses
- Opportunities for future growth
- Long-term strategic directions
- Appendices (Mandatory) Attach the following:
- Interview transcripts (required for academic rigor).
- Any supporting documents (charts, graphs, etc.) relevant to the case study.
Assessment Criteria
- Depth of Analysis (20%): Ability to analyze and synthesize insights across departments.
- Application of Strategic Frameworks (20%): Effective use of strategic tools.
- Quality of Recommendations (20%): Realistic and actionable suggestions based on the analysis.
- Presentation Skills (15%): Clarity and persuasiveness of case presentation.
- Report Structure and Clarity (25%): Overall organization, coherence, and adherence to word count.
D. Review Writing – 10%
Each group will consist of the same member of group as assignment 1 and 2.
The topic for the review writing will be given in the class.
The review report not more than 3,000 words, excluding references. The references should follow APA format.
General Instructions for all Group:
The group must prepare a written report for assignments 1, 2, and review writing (1.5 spaced; font size 12) for the given task. The presenting group may use PowerPoint and any other presentation materials to facilitate the presentation and understanding of the topic. The presentation slides also have to be submitted based on the stated date line. The Turnitin similarity must be less than 15%. For evaluation criteria, please see the rubric for presentation and the rubric for content assessment (written report).
