Part 2: The "Concept-Matching Stage" of Movie Analysis (40 points)
Purpose
In Part 1, you watched your movie and took notes on at least 6 interesting scenes, behaviors, interactions, and experiences. In
Part 2, your goal is to identify developmental concepts from the course that may be relevant to your observations and
demonstrate that you understand what those concepts mean. You are NOT applying the concepts to the movie yet. You will do
that in Part 3.
Step 1: Read the Relevant Textbook Chapters
Return to the developmental stage(s) represented in your movie and read the corresponding textbook chapters in detail. You
are expected to read these chapters even if we have not covered them in class yet. For example: if your movie includes
preschool-age children, review the chapters on the preschool years; if it includes adolescents, review the chapters on
adolescence; if it includes characters from multiple developmental stages, review the chapters corresponding to those different
stages.
As you read, pay attention to concepts, theories, developmental processes, milestones, and research findings that could
potentially help explain what you observed in Part 1.
Step 2: Return to Your Part 1 Notes
Review each of your observations from Part 1 and ask:
"What course concepts might be related to what I observed?"
You may identify more than one possible concept for the same observation. Similarly, one course concept may apply to several
different observations you had. At this stage, you are exploring possibilities, so you do not need to decide which concept you
will ultimately use in your final paper.
If you want to add more observations from the movies, feel free to do so. But remember to have at least 6
observations/examples for your to work with.
