Purpose
There is no single pathway to improving as a teacher, each one of us must take our own route based on our individual strengths and weaknesses. Reflective practitioners know their strengths and weaknesses and plan for continuous growth. The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to critically reflect on your growth during this course. You will do a critical reflection activity in which you consider the changes to your teaching assumptions and practices as they relate to the areas of teaching practice we studied in this course. The questions you will consider for your reflection activity relate to the four lenses of critical thinking as outlined by Brookfield (2017). As you read the questions, critically reflect on your experiences this semester as a teacher, peer, and learner.
Prewriting/Generating Ideas
Critically reflect on your growth as an educator in this course in the following areas of teaching practice:
creating a positive learning environment
aligning objectives with standards
planning for assessment
learning about students
planning for instruction
engaging students in learning
analyzing student data
Task
Consider the following questions as you reflect on each of these areas of your teaching practice. As you review each area, jot down key ideas or deeper questions that come to mind.
How have your teaching assumptions and practices changed this semester in each of these areas? In what ways do you plan to further grow in these areas?
How do your students see your teaching practices? Where are there disconnects between your practice and student expectations? How might you bridge these gaps?
During the semester, you have interacted with peers in the classroom and colleagues in your school; how have these interactions/discussions influenced your teaching assumptions and practices? What strengths have these interactions illuminated? What areas for improvement?
How have your teaching assumptions/practices been influenced by the literature you have read this semester? Which theories do you find align well with your current teaching assumptions and practices? Which theories would you like to further explore or implement? How will you pursue this?
When you have sufficiently reflected on these four components, incorporate each of these perspectives as you write a critical reflection in which you address the following prompt:
Critically analyze your teaching practices and assumptions as they relate to classroom management through the four lenses of Brookfield’s Four Lenses of Critical Reflection (2017), looking at where you were, where you are now, and where you are going as an educational practitioner.
Criteria
Your submission will be assessed using the Four Lens Critical Reflection Rubric. Please note that the rubric is arranged as a stair step of Bloom’s Taxonomy levels. An exemplary paper will contain the following components:
Clear organization
Supporting details and examples
A minimum of 5 scholarly sources to support your ideas
Use of APA format for in-text and reference page citations
Please Note: Your reflection must be submitted as a paper. Videos, PowerPoints, etc. are not accepted for this assignment.
