Podcast Assignment: Research Critique on a Nursing Trend and Issue
An important aspect of professional nursing practice is the ability to critique and apply evidence-based research to your practice. For this podcast assignment, you may choose to work individually or in pairs. You will select ONE of the four research journal articles listed below on a current nursing trend that is relevant to nursing practice. You will link your findings from the scholarly article critique to the CLPNA competencies as well as linking your research findings to your future professional practice.
Plan lifelong learning strategies to maintain professional competency in accordance with CLPNA Standards of Practice.

Directions:Learners may work individually or in pairs. Learners will select one from the four journal articles below:
Your podcast should be a maximum of 15 minutes. Anything beyond the time limit will not be graded.

Detailed Steps to Complete the Podcast Assignment
1. Choose and Read the Article
Pick ONE article from the list provided.
Read the article slowly, taking notes as you go. Highlight the main points, including the research purpose, methods, findings, and conclusions.
2. Outline Your Podcast Script
Introduction (1-2 minutes):
Example: Hi, everyone! In todays podcast, Ill discuss an article about mentorship for new graduate nurses and its role in their transition to practice.
Describe why this topic is relevant to nursing.
Briefly introduce the articles authors and the main question or issue they explored.
Body (8-10 minutes):
Divide this into three segments:
1.Segment 1: Summary and Critique
Example: The article begins by discussing how mentorship can improve new nurses confidence. One strength is that it uses data from over 100 new nurses. However, a limitation is the short follow-up period, which might not capture long-term mentorship effects.
Focus on the articles purpose, key points, and any strengths or weaknesses.
2.Segment 2: Link to CLPNA Competencies
Identify which LPN competencies relate to the article.
Example:The article aligns with the CLPNA competency on professional relationships, as mentorship supports communication and teamwork.
3.Segment 3: Application to Your Practice
Explain how the articles findings might apply to your work as an LPN.
Example:In my future practice, understanding the importance of mentorship could help me seek mentors or support new nurses, creating a positive work environment.
Conclusion (1-2 minutes):
Summarize the key points discussed in each segment.
Provide any recommendations or personal thoughts on how the findings might benefit future nurses.
3. Write and Practice Your Script
Draft what you want to say for each section. Use short sentences and simple words.
Read your script out loud a few times. This will help you practice speaking naturally and sticking to the time limit.
4. Record Your Podcast
Find a quiet place. You can use a phone or computer to record.
Speak slowly and clearly.
Pause briefly between segments to keep the pace comfortable for listeners.
5. Listen and Edit
Listen to your recording to check for clear audio. If possible, use free software like Audacity to edit out background noise or mistakes.
6. Submit the Podcast
Save your recording as an audio file and upload it by the due date.
