M6. Discussion: What is the difference between correlation and causation?
1010 unread replies.1010 replies.
Causation means one thing causes another—in other words, action A causes outcome B. On the other hand, correlation is simply a relationship where action A relates to action B—but one event doesn’t necessarily cause the other event to happen.
There are three parts to this discussion.
For this discussion you are to search the internet and find two things that are correlated but one doesn’t cause the other.  Explain the correlated, but not causal, relationship. For example: Shark Attacks and Ice Cream Sales.
Identify another two variables which are correlated and would imply causation.  Explain the correlated, and implied causal, relationship. For example: being able to lift more weight at the gym and the growth in your muscle mass.
How does the average consumer misuse or misunderstand correlational and causal data when faced with data online on in the news? Why might this be dangerous?
